I was the 22nd user on LiveJournal! While I appreciated and used the site, as one of the sysadmins at its host, the site's popularity caused recurring alerts to my pager.
(No fault of LiveJournal; we were a small web-host with limited CPU/bandwidth/everything.

Seeing LiveJournal's impact (on the world and Virtualis' hosting infrastructure!) made me appreciate the care that went into high-scalability apps and led me to have a keen eye for creative optimization opportunities. 3/

More important than the love I found for optimization though,
@bradfitz's open-sourcing of LiveJournal components (e.g. BML, Memcached, etc.) and the visibility of that work led me to further open-source explorations during that era, like FastCGI and mod_perl. 4/Prikaži ovu nit -
This early exposure to LiveJournal's infrastructure needs and the software transparency (e.g. lj-dev) that
@bradfitz idealized remained a motivator in my life and my eventual commitment to working on open-source in my career. I'm so very thankful for that inspiration! 5/Prikaži ovu nit -
Congrats for all you've done,
@bradfitz. Thanks for the inspiration, and excited for what you'll do next.
