Rod Ritchie Retweeted MD Anderson Cancer Center

Methinks MDA might have a tin ear when it comes to bell ringing. Those without ever an end to treatment may not want to be treated in an infusion room which has a bell. Are their rooms without bells?https://twitter.com/MDAndersonNews/status/1193964364551925761 …

At MD Anderson, the sound of a bell ringing is a symbol of hope and represents all that we stand for. Read how some survivors have celebrated treatment milestones with our ceremonial bells: http://bit.ly/2NkDXCP  #endcancer

What’s with the bell? So we are in tx for life. Others may be as well — but finishing a regimen. Some may have the good fortune to simply end tx. Perhaps for good, perhaps only for a time. Why on earth would we metsters deny others that celebration? What has cancer stolen?

Hmm, have to poll all metsters to get a consensus on this. I can see why some people like the bell, so they could ring away at it, and those who object could have a bell-free time or place?

@abcdiagnosis was interviewed on this topic recently. Most response is that if the bell exists, needs to be somewhere that doesnt disturb those in less celebratory modes. Super insensitive otherwise.

Can’t see what the big fuss is - just be inclusive & have empathy - doesn’t bother me but bothers lots of friends & family members who are EOL - why compromise their MH? Life is shit enough with mets let’s not be cruel & have some compassion & empathy for all x

The bell IS inclusive. It is a public healing ritual. As someone on tx for life, I find it no less poignant than the scent of fresh cut grass or leaves rustling in the wind. We live or are at EOL w/a raw hand. But can still have empathy and find joy for those w/another hand.

I think empathy has to cut both ways. Have bell zones, but provide a bell-free experience for those who hate it.
