  5. Went to Famous Professor’s home for dinner with a few faculty members and grad students in my program. Some drinks were consumed, and my then-PI and another faculty member got into a loud argument over dinner. The grad students haplessly looked on. Awkward, to say the least!

2/2 My research team has published two studies demonstrating that the best correlate of women’s perpetration of violence against men is their own victimization. This isn’t always the case AND it is important to put it in context of what we know. If you’d like the articles dm me.

I hope there is a sweet spot somewhere between ‘fan fiction’ and dumping all your data without a narrative that can be followed by a non specialist

This piece has some nuance: stories can help convey info. But good stories in science are accurate (and often complicated) stories.

I tell a story with my data, but it often ends up like Stephen King novel -- horrifying, you don't know what it is happening most of the time, and you are left with more questions at the end than you started with.

Y/N. The number of people truly interested in your work is low. All people can relate to stories because we are surrounded by them in all types of media. Flowery and half-truths isn't the right way to go about it IMO, but there should be something to make people want to read it.

  15. Am I the only one who’s irked by academic writing advice of “telling a story with your data”? Writing fanfiction about our data is what got us into the reproducibility crisis in the first place. I’d rather have a less compelling narrative than a flowery account of half-truths.

Today my son was cornered at school by kids who wanted to “test” him for just because he is half-Chinese. They chased him. Scared him. And made him cry. I was the same age when I was bullied for being Pakistani. It’s 2020. I thought things had changed by now... 💔

My wife and I never talk baby talk to our kid. We enforce academic seminar norms and jargon. My child isn’t even 2 yet and can interrupt presenters on the first slide. Adults at family gatherings are shocked when my child asks a question that turns out to be more of a comment.

"Science is messy, and the results of research rarely conform fully to plan or expectation. ‘Clean’ narratives are an artefact of inappropriate pressures and the culture they have generated." Fabulous editorial from . More editors sign on?
