End of year thread time! Do we hate these now? I'm doing it anyway because freelancing is really hard and this year was hard and I'm so proud of the work I did in 2021. More about rates and being a freelance journalist (for almost 10 years now!!) at the end.

People who think "endemic" means "no big deal" do not live where malaria is endemic (600K deaths per year, mostly children), or where tuberculosis is endemic (1.5M deaths per year), or where measles remains endemic (200K deaths per year).

Fiona Apple is on fire right now. Asking you to join her in the fight for public virtual access to court in Maryland. Injustice happens in empty courtrooms. Explains how to call now & urge lawmakers to pass the law. Also this video is just the best. Watch:

The accountant we hired to do our taxes last year sent us a card in the mail with a New Yorker cartoon depicting someone in jail for fraud because they tried to save money by doing their own taxes.

For , I wrote about how hotel workers are faring cuz the pandemic hit their industry hard. DC lawmakers tried to protect these laid-off-workers, requiring hotels to hire them back when jobs become avail. But what if they don't cuz service is cut?

Tourists are returning to DC but hotel work isn't always. For example, the Hilton reduced housekeeping, impacting workers' wages/benefits. Amal no longer qualifies for family coverage cuz the hotel cut her hours. Now, her husband can't access his meds.

This is a really excellent local story on a common theme: the pandemic took a sledgehammer to an industry (hotels) and the people bearing the worst effects are the lowest-paid, least protected workers in that industry (housekeepers).

I’ve seen lots of people telling freelancers not to go to Ukraine without security, training, gear, etc. I’d rather see public commitments from media orgs that they’ll provide freelancers with this—& recognition that many freelancers aren’t “going to” Ukraine, they’re Ukrainian.

The top-line result of this study of microlending is that it helps women start businesses and earn income. But unfortunately, the businesses they are starting are often multilevel marketing businesses, where you mostly make money by signing up other people. (1/7)

I have *such* strong feelings about this. A “fixer” is a derogatory term/concept. It protects a hierarchy that permits the unfair treatment of highly qualified people – often from minorities or with less power – and for “big” names to rise on the networks/talent of others.
