Yale is getting rid of Intro to Art History (it's official now). This is of course bad, but not because "we're losing Western Civ and Evropa uwu" Rather the elite is continuing to revolt, refusing any engagement w/ shared narrative & meaning *at all*https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2020/01/24/art-history-department-to-scrap-survey-course/ …

this can so easily be solved: designate the course Western art, provide intro courses in the other great classical artistic traditions (Islamicate, Indian, East Asian, etc). Expand the Beauty Canon. Simple as But somehow this is not being done. Something else is going on here

Instead, Yale refuses to offer any foundational courses whatsoever, while promising a future intro course that will somehow be "equal" to all else heaven forbid we students are presented with coherent narratives (the implication being we're too stupid to question them ourselves)pic.twitter.com/4Z2jTTVe2F

Of course this quickly becomes incoherent: it's too problematic to posit the existence of a coherent "Western art," yet we should be able to tackle "Global Craft" in one semester just fine! it doesn't signify anything in itself; that's not the point...

Behind this word salad, such claims on the universal are revealed to be nakedly particular. create no narrative of your own, & in spite of your pretensions to "global modernism(s)", you will be subsumed by the voguish narrowness of the current Discourse:https://mobile.twitter.com/wilks_isaac/status/1214596597092421632 …

And here's the thing: the incoherence is the point! The university has in this case *explicitly* abandoned the notion that there are narratives that exist, that they hold meaning, that this meaning can be shared, and that their complexity is worth teaching to willing students

the result is the reduction of education to a purely transactional arrangement between individuals, within a vacuum of no shared truths, where all the teacher "teaches" is subversion for its own sake ok boomerpic.twitter.com/ddfYDtI96m

(nothing against Barringer personally—he is at the mercy of a powerful institution fueled by militant boomer ethos)

reminds me of @Meaningness critique of "second-generation pseudo-pomo". seems like we're still dealing with the echoes of post-WWII fear of grand narrativespic.twitter.com/n3KXvOYSzX
