in my behavioral econ classes, game theory was presented as a universal model for understanding human behavior in social/political contexts now i’m wondering if it’s more like a historical description of how a specific type of strategic mind worked in the mid 20th century

this is why I really deeply appreciate the scholarship of thought that Michel Foucault brought into existence - to me his investigations tugging at dominant narratives, exposing the 1st of many polyphonic counternarratives hidden just below the surface of mainstream history.

There is actually a really good way to point out this dichotomy within the language of the discipline, fwiw. All you need are computational constraints on agents and partial information over their own utility functions. POOF! Now the discipline doesn't expect humans to behave...

...in game theoretically optimal ways. I mention this because toy problems in this discipline are wrapped in*massive* cultural baggage that is really hard to get out from under.
