i wish my game theory classes had taught me the history behind the assumptions in the models e.g. if we’re going to say the world is filled with isolated individuals who optimize for their own self-interest, we should take a look at how we became so atomized in the first place

it feels weird to me that these models were presented as de-contextualized artifacts rather than products of their time. they were totally divorced from the social and historical circumstances that led to their creation

Yes, that's exactly what it is. Economists mistake human behavior under certain conditions (real or imagined) for human nature & exploit every trapping of biology/evolution the model brings to justify never behaving otherwise. 1/2

Daniel Schmachtenberger has given the best rundown of game theoretic models I've yet heard. I've linked two videos but there are a few more you might want to check out. 2/2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAd9O6a6R5w …https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/daniel-schmachtenberger-utopia-or-bust-designing-non/id1057220344?i=1000446185037&fbclid=IwAR1Sp1H3ZmLjfBIasdkoPZqPQL1nPh6iuQt2Jp-RIwT5qk7EPgBYl0aIPlc …

Have you come across some instances of deviance from game theory..Would actually be very interesting to know.

hmm, i suppose an extreme example is religious martyrdom. people oftentimes sacrifice themselves instead of defecting

interesting—thinking about it as a product of the geopolitical conflicts of the day would lead you to draw v different conclusions about its usefulness today fwiw I think we could have a similar aha moment if we really got into what we mean by “incentives”
-
yes! i feel like there's such a thing as zombie models, similar to
@SamoBurja's concept of "dead players" — i.e. models that we continue to use, even though they were the product of a much different era - Još 1 odgovor

I thoroughly enjoyed this thread. Thank you for sharing - my two cents is that while it can help explain some aspects of human behaviour some of the time, it cannot be (and should not be) universally applied to everything
