I worked at a really big company for 12 years — they’re huge, you’ve heard of them — and part of my leaving was three years in a row where I couldn’t get time off around Christmas because we simply would not train anyone else to do my job, so I was essential.

Every time I tried to take time off it was like pulling teeth, because of someone else making a shortsighted management decision that impacted me. I had so much time banked that they told me I was going to lose it — and still wouldn’t give me time off.

I had to have a very uncomfortable conversation where I asked why I was having the compensation for doing my job taken away because of our management team’s refusal to spend the time on training someone else.

So yes, I had a multi billion dollar company ask me to forgo part of my pay to not “screw over the team” as if I was the one causing the problem …causing the problem by wanting to have ALL OF THE COMPENSATION THEY AGREED TO PAY ME IN MY CONTRACT

Anyways if anyone who used to work with me remembers a time where I was gone for three months, it’s because I stood up for myself and wouldn’t let a multi-billion dollar company claw back my pay for work I had already done so that a manager could get a staff utilization bonus.

I love this. How often do you think the opposite will happen, that they’ll turn around and pay you extra because things are going great? We had a record breaking quarter and the company gave us a fucking blanket with their logo on it. It was tiny, like a hand towel.https://twitter.com/d4bbl3z/status/1390493672161095682 …

Delightful sarcasm someone with a private account: “I can’t understand why you quit to go do your own thing. Such stability.” See, I thought the salary and health plan were keeping me there. I had to get angry enough to do the math and realize I could do better.

True story: the More Meetings cartoon is about this. We had a multi-hour meeting to discuss how far behind target we were because we were understaffed. The meeting put us even further behind on the target. But we couldn’t afford the time to train new folks https://twitter.com/jvancitters/status/1390497729483132929 …pic.twitter.com/5QqijQFLKI

“But then our numbers will be zero for that week!” <— managers whose compensation is based on those numbers. My problem was because of poor manager decisions, but their poor decisions were because of how their pay was structured.https://twitter.com/jjenkins101201/status/1390635543936053252 …
