I'm astonished by how many people are buying the thinking that waiving vaccine IP will somehow magically increase vaccine supply. A patent is not a factory, personnel, a GMP process, and regulatory approval. It will take months to boot up even without supply chain shortages.

I don't know why it's surprising. Most people think drugs and vaccines are technological magic like their cell phones or software. Easily taken for granted with no understanding of the underlying complex industrial base.

"Months is boot up" is fine, if you're familiar with the timescales other countries are currently planning on for their vax efforts.

We can make a bet and see how many "generic" vaccine doses actually every get made and administered. It will be at best a drop in the bucket.

Current projections range from 2-5 years to vaccinate the entire world. Even if setting up generic vaccine facilities takes 6 months, it could bring down the vaccination timeframe by an year or two. It’s good news, therefore

Scott Gottlieb estimated it would be closer to a year. US will manufacture over 10 billion doses in that time.

India would happily pay the ~10$/dose vaccine to get access. If any of the vaccine developers actually thought this would be doable in time they’d just take the money and build the scale. Finally, if countries thought this could be done, they would just infringe.. good luck suing

Why did India regulatory authorities delay Pfizer's application for months leaving the vaccine currently unregistered after the world saw the results in Israel:https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6794836819809726464/ …
