You can't experience something for the first time twice, so pay close attention to those moments when they happen. Treat it like a crime scene. Identify and study all the moving parts in that moment and how they worked in concert to prompt *that emotion* you just had.

As you get better at apprehending and dissecting these moments, you'll start noticing shit that you never noticed before. You'll spot little moments of elegance or brilliance that really make something sing, but when considered alone are nearly invisible.

No matter what kind of work you're doing, there are a *ton* of levers at your disposal that'll make your audience's emotions do all kinds of stuff. Figure out what those levers are! Make entirely new levers! Engineer new ways to break the hearts of strangers!

Oh! And don't stop at just the ways in which a work /mechanically/ strikes an emotional chord -- think about the way you experience it subjectively. I often have this conversation with students, and also feel compelled to warn them that once you realise deconstruction is crucial to creation, you stop being able to enjoy things in the same way. And that if they love games but aren't passionate about MAKING games... maybe stop.
