If you like (or love!) the my research group and our collaborators create, please consider giving to support my students doing more awesome science: Any amount helps, recurring gifts are best. All funds go to support the students.

Does community detection with Stochastic Block Models change if we know a network is bipartite? and I have done a deep dive, and we think the answer is yes! Here's a preprint, which we'd love thoughts on, but also a threadsplanation... 1/8

Like many people, I can’t stop thinking about this story. I can’t recall how many times a bank has treated me like a criminal. The friction of just daily living while black is overwhelming

The area under the ROC curve (AUC) is so frequently criticized and misunderstood that I often wonder whether I am the metric’s only fan. Let me explain why how I see and value the AUC. (thread)

The most shocking thing I learned in poli sci grad school is that activism works. - join your local YIMBYs to lobby for denser, more affordable cities - register voters with a local org - support immigrants at court visits - learn protest skills, like medic/marshal/legal obs

Me and ’s paper on promotion to top jobs and marriage stability was just published in AEJ: Applied Economics. This picture shows the main finding of the paper: promotion increases the divorce probability for women, but not for men. 1/10

This beautiful meditation on the academic tradition of letters of recommendation also reveals why "going to college" is ideally a transformative experience, one that cannot be had online and is inherently resistant to "efficiency": college is a place of becoming. h/t

Flattered? that Cummings listed two of my papers in his "unconventional" job ad and asked me to comment. tl;dr: more data science in government is good 👏, but be smart: good policies need more than quant skills, and the conventional wisdom isn't always wrong.

Suggested New Years resolutions: - Say no more often, especially to things you're only doing for a CV line/to impress people. - Use your (relative) power to pull others up the ladder behind you. - Speak up for people in less privileged positions whenever you can.
