5/4 Outtake… Description: I am choosing ‘Read from next item’ from the TalkBack menu. Transcript: “This graphic test” (but with clicks as the virtual cursor moves over and ignores the other stuff). Variations on this happened three times but only with Chrome.

Chrome 92 on Android 11 with TalkBack, behaves as with Firefox except it inserts a pause between each graphic announcement. Transcript: “graphic This graphic is graphic a graphic test graphic tweet graphic.” I assume alt text of each graphic is an emoji, which is useless. 4/4

Using TalkBack on Android 11 with the Twitter app, the clapping hands emoji between each word are ignored. Transcript: “This is a test tweet.” Notice the TalkBack captions show the emoji. Good case of why, if you can, you trust your ears in testing: 2/4

The Eden Corn Festival has a mechanical bull modified to look like a giant ear of corn. I trust you can come up with your own NSFW gags.

Here is a post getting shares for vertically centering text in a button: But it uses px & (single-colon) pseudo elements. I cannot leave a comment on the post, so if you try this then test for 1.4.12 and use relative units. Maybe plan for logical styles.

If you plan to drop some coin on a book, tutorial, course, whatever, that promises to teach you to debug CSS, maybe look at the CSS of the site marketing it and see if it is crap. Or its tutorials are 2000-era. Or the CSS makes stuff inaccessible. Or ignores browser bugs. Etc.

Unsurprising Facebook would lie, blame the FTC, break its agreement in doing so, then use weasel language to justify its lies. More info on Ad Observer, blocked by FB: Block Facebook at the router. Get your parents off it.

Reminder that at least 50% of front-end folks are not doing their job. This assumes the other 50% aren’t throwing tabindex onto headings and table cells because they think SR users only have a Tab key.

Today at the cafe I get the sense they noticed my shirt. Yes, this is another look-in-the-sunglasses-reflection gag.

In the foreground is an order ticket with the customer name, I SEE PIG FOOD. Visible just behind it is a pair of reflective sunglasses, and in the reflection is a t-shirt with an image of a pink neon sign representing a profile of a pink pig with neon blue SEAFOOD printed across the length of its body.

Pan-apple-opticon. I remember when images of my bald head were auto-blocked on assorted platforms as being bums, bosoms, bollocks, bet cetera. I anticipate false positives, abuse, more. Because it always goes that way.

The Wayback does not go to my 1993 messes, but I cataloged my 1996 Jolt Cola frames experiment and my first job as a “webmaster” (1996): Look at that chaos. The aardvark head was done in RayDream Designer. Took a day to render.

Jolt Cola page in a frameset with links to info, an animated GIF of a spinning Jolt Cola can, assorted background textures of cans, and a curiously stylized phallic rendered aardvark head with a Jolt Cola logo texture map.

Remember when the web turned 30 in [checks calendar] March 2019? Remember CERN made a dedicated 30th site in ’19? Or did it just turn 30 again? We should maybe agree as an industry.

Gonna end this year-long thread here. 44 books since I started tracking at the end of last July. If you are at all curious, I track and rate books in , an independent start-up: Better fit than Amazon’s GoodReads.

Finished “Six Easy Pieces” (1963) by Richard Feynman. Lectures given to Caltech freshman & sophomores (though they kept dropping, and grad students & faculty gleefully took their spots). It took two hours on one page but I finally grokked Gell-Mann’s elementary particles table.

It’s like I have trust issues.

Looking over the pages of a book at a pair of mirror sunglasses balanced on the arm of an Adirondack chair showing the reflection of a person walking up behind me. In the distance is a boardwalk and river.

‟Embracing Design Constraints” Started in late 2019, stopped, started in June, stopped, third try is the charm? Sort of a meta-takeaway is the only people blaming accessibility for poor design are poor designers.
