“bad sportsmanship” is looking backwards instead of upwards. e.g. when #1 becomes obsessed with defending a place rather than continuing to look up

the reason being #1 has such outsized attention relative to #2 or #3 is because we wonder at what one who is at the top of the mountain is looking at we already KNOW #2 and #3 are looking at #1 but what does #1 see?

What gets attention gets more attention even if there's no substance to it. Great seriousness goes into making entertainment products, not because it's a valuable feedback mechanism for culture to understand itself, but because there's big money in cartoon animals making puns.

that's true, a kardashian effect. but the point is that even absent all marketing efforts #1 is unique in that it has only "god" to look up to while everyone else has #1 to look up to. they don't have to deal with the barren desert of "what's next?"
