"the blind men and the elephant" was supposedly a metaphor for understanding god putting the blind men into a room and trying to integrate their stories into one coherent thing is laudable. but not a replacement for direct experience which necessarily involves myopiahttps://twitter.com/AbstractFairy/status/1412609769869918211 …

at risk of stretching this analogy far too much, you could also say that in each room, the task is finding THE key once the key is found, every other key disappears and you have to start again with a whole bunch of new keys and new doors

there is no way to "keep" keys going forward the same way you cannot know if you can maintain passion for something as you progress in proficiency at it maybe you lose interest. maybe it gets too hard. it's impossible to tell prior to the attainment.

there is a desire to reconciliate prayer and meditation prayer being The Thing to Do for traditional religion, and meditation being The Thing for new "spiritual not religious" religions

this strikes me the same as asking "what piano do i buy to be a good pianist" "what camera do i buy to be a good photographer" "what etf/altcoin do i buy to become rich" "what framework do i learn to get good at coding"
Show this thread -
hooking up a piano to act as a keyboard to type into a code editor to manually control a camera to take pictures of astrological movements to buy stocks on does NOT give you the best of all worlds
Show this thread -
that being said they are not completely equal. learning to code may be more motivating for someone b/c there's future career prospects. maybe u hate tech so piano might be better. maybe ur deaf so try photography

the point is, it has to make SENSE to YOU prayer is rooted in religious foundation so w/o that background it's as weird as rubbing lube on your nipples so they don't bleed when you're a beginner runner. makes sense w/ context. feels perverted otherwisehttps://www.runnersworld.com/beginner/a20846387/how-can-i-prevent-bloody-nipples/ …

meditation on the other hand make sense even outside spiritual context as a way to clear the mind, just relax and chill, or w/e both prayer and meditation however suffer the same noise : signal ratio of a history of derivative understandings providing "helpful guides"
Show this thread -
meditation, because of its lower barrier to entry requiring no historical text or history, is like javascript in that it has a higher noise : signal ratio *some try to combine the "best of both worlds" by using "meditation" in some specific religious context. cue fancy sanskrit

prayer and meditation then often become similar to the original "solution" of rounding up the blind men and interviewing them it is a desire to avoid "wrongness" by leveraging the minds of others b/c being wrong together w the experts doesn't feel so badhttps://twitter.com/a_yawning_cat/status/1411555942777298945 …

the original act of "listening to god" is lost. one does not perform the Most Important Act of Listening by going to a neighborhood coffee shop for the christian snake jazz background music and happy background vibes of friendly chatter

in this sense, going to "find myself" by solo hiking the appalachian trail makes more sense you find yourself by getting lost. by throwing away all the keys you've gathered, preserved, collected, documented, and mind-mapped into a roam database

same for the frazzled housewife who wants to travel far and exotic she falls trap to the same "leave behind all my flat earther brothers" trap and has to drag along her entire family she travels to get away from the voices to find her OWN voice. but the voices follow
Show this thread -
and here is the thing about finding your own voice ever notice how every thought that arises only appears in consciousness because "You" listened to it? if "You" are always doing the listening... then what is always doing the speaking?
Show this thread -
what "You" have to say is always Silence this ACT of proactively taking the initiative to speak silence is known as "active listening" or "prayer" or "meditation" or w/e
