trying to "live your own life" by refusing to follow any scripts at all is like scrambling a rubiks cube and demanding a compensation of value for the production of the resulting uniqueness unique but the samepic.twitter.com/VnZfYSCITC

Risk of being too scripted of course too

And it’s a bigger risk? That’s where my thinking has drifted lately at least

My favorite quote from early synthesizer salesman Tom Rhea: "By all means, play with noise. But 99% of it is useless to you. The job of the electronic musician is to sift through that 99% to find the 1% that resonates with people." Related thread:https://twitter.com/LukeAymon/status/1379548707713060868?s=20 …

Most sounds in music have a real-world analog of some kind, because they're shaped by our environment. SOPHIE's metallic percussion still sounds like metal things being hit together. But 99% of the combinations we can make appear to us as noise, because they're meaningless.

I agree overall: if you stand on nobody's shoulders, you won't see very far. Even if the compensation of value you expect isn't monetary (say you're optimizing for love), it's worth emulating people who have been successful at attaining that value.
