related to this is a misunderstanding of volatility. many imagine PRICE going up and down as volatility and think "yeah whatever that sounds easy" but forget that volatility always is due to new INFORMATIONhttps://twitter.com/a_yawning_cat/status/1393072212475670531 …

yes, which means that the flow of information is the basis of volatility, but what controls the flow of information?

whoever has the megaphone "i can handle volatility" as naively presumed is akin to "i can handle extreme randomness" but b/c real world volatility always has some form of agency behind it, prepping for extreme randomness doesn't guard against the volatility of agency

Im not a prepper but id argue that preppers dont think of themselves as hedging randomness but hedging antagonistic agency. From the other side it looks random because of the relative lack of control

i dunno. my guess is most people who buy gold bricks are unaware that the point is to have the option run away to another country/area just like most gun owners are "unaware" that the point is to blow someone else's brain's out and kill a son or w/e if necessary

Prepper people seem pretty commited to staying where they are imo. Im sure many have bugout plans, but even then wherever they're going is pretty much as stationary as where they're leaving. Also seems like they're very aware what the point of a gun is.

twisted mentat @xnorcraftmet a family at campsite preparing to chow down on MREs despite being less than a half mile from parking and they'd collected enough wood to burn for like a week, but they shared some tasty venison jerky so can't judge. kids looked bored af, devices must have run out of batteriesShow this thread1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

i think mostly their efforts are/would be impotent but it gives them a sense of control over their own lives and an excuse for a family activity, even though it annoys their kids

imo aging correlates with “everything is going to collapse” which tends towards wanting to leave the next generation with long gamma assets. e.g. gold, property, education, doom bunker, bitcoin, etc…https://twitter.com/HedgeDirty/status/1254770208696266761 …
