in theory this is almost never "true" since forever is a long time. however in practice the very arising of the thought itself leads to decisions that affect the long arc of life

a depression has permanency unlike a recession. like a dent in a car so deep it cannot be fixed there is no "normal" to return to bc normal has been utterly destroyed. it is not just sadness but the thought "i will be sad forever"
