I think too that a need to be seen as good creates a fear of being seen as anything other than good. Fears are irrational and naturally spawn delusions, like doing evil while convinced you are good Image is everything , imagined Judgements are morality

Another possibility is people cloaking their ego in the frames of good It’s easy to spot in other people, but in your head it is subtle. Eg, you always think how your actions will impact other people— empathy! But really, you are only imaging how they might complement you
