a common pattern w academics is discomfort converting from explore mode to exploit mode. (correlation bc academia is being paid to explore, so bypasses having to make the choice)

though virtuous for someone who literally cannot care about secular things like money (van gogh) it seems like a dysfunction for most. especially if they’re ACTIVELY trying to make money w stocks/crypto/etc...

because the act of exploitation cannot be integrated into a healthy world view, the academic institution acts as a middleman doing the exploitation to buffer and keep hands clean

once outside the institution, the direct need for exploitation can lead to a desire for retreat to a more utopian world without exploitation but that kind of eden was only made possible by the middleman AND turning a blind eye to the indirect exploitation
