in order for the hooman to be happy sacrificing itself for the future version of itself, it must take the attitude of a dog it must avoid the temptations of the now by happily putting on the leash that its future-vision holds out

Uncertainty plays a large role. It would be one thing to be certain that one's sacrifice would please future self. But it is rarely certain, and more certain (though less inspiring) prospects are usually present and can be used to put off making any decisions.
to try and actually SEE the future is an act of leadership. the present-self is trying to be Master over future-self when it should be the reverse when dog follows leash tugging into who-knows-where rather than certainty of sniffing another dog butt, it performs a Act of Faith
