yea, the word has violent connotations. “euthanize” may be better however there is still active work being done to “end” the relationship even if there is no malice e.g. “the cat euthanized the mouse”
I suppose euthanize isn't far off because the victim-self is by definition somewhat helpless. I feel resistance to this notion in the person-centred therapy domain where a therapist seeks only to 'facilitate', under the assumption that the therapee will eventually find their way
