this means that each cup of water has a spread out concentration of the solute. e.g. 100 cars on a 1 mile stretch vs 100 mile stretch. the flow of cars per second is much lower given a larger stretch.

the 'purification' that activated carbon provides isn't like some magic sponge rocks that magically know what's good and what's bad and absorbs it like a black hole. it's a way to super-dilute something.
