meritocracy is about who to look to. it points to the direction of merit. a tiered system produces more “champions”. regional champ, state champ, national champ, world champ

a global system on the other hand (made possible through technology) is more meritocratic in some ways, but destroys the ability for local regions to know who to look to.

the biggest loss however is probably loss of “heroic confidence” in local regions. everyone compares against the best in the world and squeeze into the cities, never to come back home

the ability to take a heroic attitude towards everyday tasks is necessary to undertake them without resentment. since they’re mostly “meaningless” tasks like chopping wood or carrying water
