bitcoin is similar to the terrorist using a newspaper to show that a victim is alive. the newspaper is an unpredictable hash of world events that creates a "now" within an otherwise timeless world of information (photograph)

to believe in bitcoin is to believe in the shared timestream of bitcoin. its advantage is that there is no "leader" figure and it has the longest sense of history. the disadvantage is the initial distribution of wealth within it. whether or not you consider it fair.
