for men, it kicked off a dominance arms race where you had to be alpha at making money, physical fitness, philosophy, music, art, math, business etc... basically EVERYTHING in order to feel Good Enough

it mostly collapses into a desire for money though since money is potential and allows one to dream of being everything else. though it ultimately never satisfies.
