In tech, we are increasingly viewing "measuring all the things" as a badge of rigor & intelligence. My take: You don't need to measure everything you do Yes, measurement is important But equally important is the judgment of what should be measured & what need not be measured.
imo this is an outcome of how promotions work more than anything else. as long as the comp structure requires self promotion, justifications and evidence will be found.
