rich countries, when paid more can easily buy imported goods and live a “good life” coasting on their more powerful currency. however over time they become more useless because they’ve stopped making

ideally, the excess time/energy from imports results in the creation of more complex/beautiful/powerful/useful things. however most of the time it’s just wasted.

this is a steelman for why the mars rover is important. it’s one of the few things that developed countries can still do uniquely and so justify the trade deficit. though tbh it’s probably more “art” than most would admit.
