my 'big idea' (for now) is something like "ignoring negativity is the root of all problems." it seems to be the primary reason for all of my 'disillusionments' around spirituality, rationality, philosophy, etc...https://twitter.com/a_yawning_cat/status/1362677135291207680 …
much spirituality claims to eat shadow but is often a toxic positive therapy group you can't escape (b/c the cold shock from losing all that warmth is painful) that revolves around ignoring shadow. (to be fair this *is* a step up from actively fighting it)

much philosophy claims to be about living a good life but in practice seems to ignore life. a lot of keyboard stoicism is like this.

each disillusionment (realization that it isn't the silver bullet that solves The Problem of Everything) was spearheaded by certain encounters. e.g. ribbonfarm for rationality, jed mckenna (imaginary character) for spirituality, and "doers" like nassim taleb for philosophy.

they all poked fun at these Fields of Virtue but also occasionally exposed a kind of 'sharpness' like when a cat occasionally exposes its claws. (in taleb's case, often outright aggression)

actually taleb(specifically black swan) was probably the disillusionment towards authority. (schooling, the financial system, etc...) the philosophy disillusionment is much more recent and feels like it was a spontaneous realization around the time of:https://twitter.com/a_yawning_cat/status/1333339180601020416 …

religion is another one. (went to multiple christian groups as a kitten) i differentiate it from spirituality in that it is often Named and has Names for Important Things. e.g. rather than use relationships as the Binding Element it uses sacred Artifacts, Rules, and Virtues

spirituality for me also seems tightly bound to psychology even though from usage they are separate fields. if i had to differentiate, mainstream 'psychology' is about how to adjust and cope to society while spirituality is about escaping it. acceptance vs freedom.
Show this thread -
psychology attempts to use acceptance as the gateway to freedom while spirituality uses freedom as a gateway to acceptance.

this seems to jordan peterson's achilles heel. trying to force acceptance as a means of freedom doesn't work because it creates an extremely negative reaction from others that can kill you.

e.g. his personal sense of self as someone bravely doing the right thing has basically been shredded and murdered into burning hate devil man by popular rhetoric so while i empathize, i also keep the claw socks on to avoid nuclear level faux pas accidents.

(w/o postrationalism this is where i'd blame all the "stupid people" and imply but not directly say that they should be euthanized.)https://twitter.com/a_yawning_cat/status/1316660458401812481 …

these domains seem to create a rock-paper-scissors loop dissatisfaction w/ authority leads to philosophy leads to rationalism leads to post-rationalism leads to religion leads to authority.
Show this thread -
probably not right, but the point is you need to have a completed loop with ALL rock/paper/scissor/etc.. otherwise the game isn't a game. this loop of dissatisfaction is the 'life is suffering' idea that allows the Game to not be meaninglessly boring.
Show this thread -
ignoring an aspect of reality just b/c it's negative is like saying "ok no one is allowed to use scissors anymore b/c cat claws are sharp." everyone ends up using paper extra hard b/c no idiot would use rock. then everyone screams whenever anything sharp appears in the world
Show this thread -
incidentally i will end this thought train with a spiritual idea. how can everyone be One but also unique?
Show this thread -
well...b/c there is only One Game. everyone single individual has their Thing but it's understanding the Whole Game that allows one to see how they fit into the whole. being 'everything' allows one to be 'unique'https://twitter.com/a_yawning_cat/status/1359762173602398210 …
