In Matrix, humans as batteries don't make sense b/c human bodies primarily consume energy. The story is that this was dumbed down from the original story of using them for their processing power. but here's an alternative to what it means to be a "battery":

Perhaps it's similar to why babies can be a source of energy for new families despite their absolute powerlessness and how they ONLY consume and poop. (Combine with a dash of I Really Want a Son not a Daughter)

When parents "Eat" their children they live through them, seeing them as trophies, a way to continue their own shattered dreams. The desire to "Pass it On" ironically creates "Give it to me" behaviors as the child is not truly seen.
