u know how ping pong balls come in 1 star, 2 star, and 3 star varieties? They’re all part of the same process, it’s the QA that filters out the good from the bad.

I got some hints that such a thing might happen with bicycles -- different bicycle models that ostensibly had the same frame, but different parts groups, seemed to have more frame issues for models with cheaper parts "This frame barely passes QA, put the cheap parts on it"

Yep, though for some brands like Apple or designer bags, having something similar or low quality existing is a nono so they burn low quality items or sue/bully to protect the brand. the brand margin is worth more than “recycling” the rejects.

Chinese products aren’t worth building a high margin brand around b/c the stereotype of “low quality” (often due to real events like food safety scandals) is too powerful so they continue “recycling” thus perpetuating the stereotype.
