IMO monogamy is about reaching a point in a relationship where you are comfortable BEING with "Other" in silence. Polyamory would be the next step where people "spread" this self-silence capability. Each relationship leaves both parties well off and then moves on.
The purpose of dedicated monogamy is to reach this point where there is nothing left to know of the other or be known of the self. Monogamy forces you to confront this existential "boredom" with the "World", with "Other"
So polyamory itself is neutral. It can be virtuous or non-virtuous(when used as constant distraction/hedonism). IMO It's an "advanced" form of relationship that shouldn't be undertaken unless you can point to at least ONE "successful" relationship.
E.g. if you have an enlightened relationship with Self by all means become a polyamorous sex guru in the desert. the problem of course is that you become the relationship bottleneck and all the followers start practicing destructive polyamory while waiting in line.
So while the top of the hierarchy is virtuous the majority of is not. But b/c the hierarchy claims polyamory as a virtue rather than "Virtuous if X, Y, Z" the followers are confused and just try their best. b/c they are trying sth too advanced they fuck up. (literally)
that's b/c monogamy involves a form of throwing away the key and figuring out how to "escape your chains". Without this commitment of faith and burning the bridge. there's no way you'll have the focus to move forwards b/c you'll always be looking back.
