If you think of yourself as needing to be "brave" then you identify as a coward constantly needing to put on airs. If you admit you are fearful, you identify as someone brave facing a challenge.

It's not about "doing" the opposite but "being" the opposite. This "being" identity shift comes with it a drastic loss in competency. E.g. identifying as a non-smoker who smokes all the time would be laughed at as the worst non-smoker.
