Incidentally, this is how science and religion work together. Science stretches the boundaries of the known which increases the size of "God". The sense of "God" first starts off within the family, say w/ the "Strict Father", then becomes sth like Zeus, Monotheism, etc...https://twitter.com/a_yawning_cat/status/1342732738973986818 …

This means that praying to God is praying to an entity so vast, powerful, and universal that you know it CAN'T possibly care about your human issue. It is just like islanders praying to a Volcano. It's not expected to literally intervene in pathetic human issues.

The greater the knowledge of science while rooted in a spiritual appreciation, the more "powerful" the act of observation. If however, if one tries something too difficult, then that spiritual appreciation is shattered. One never recovers from the shock of Imperfect Father.

E.g. you start pretending you understand something and 10 years later you realize you're an idiot that plateaued with a bag of cheap tricks and hacks. This applies both to technical understanding as well as the self understanding of if you actually enjoy what u do or who u are.

Meditation can be a form of prayer when you just sit and think about where you ARE. Without scientific understanding you're just in your room. Maybe reading some books allow you to imagine yourself in a magical zen forest.

But with science, where you ARE is spiraling around the sun at 30km/s with sun spinning around the galaxy at 200km/s. The greater your understanding of the whole the smaller "you" become. This grants the perspective to squash or forgive your problems like a tiny bug.

This however is only an exercise and a metaphor. Thinking about this stuff while your boss is yelling in your face doesn't actually help that much. In fact, it can be a crutch. E.g. edgy emo who deals w/ all problems w/ "What's the use we're all insignificant and gonna die."

The trap here is like how this video only shows a small slice of universal knowledge even if it's granting perspective. It's only about diameter. For someone w/ a more active imagination, looking at a simple log line chart provides a similar effect.https://youtu.be/i93Z7zljQ7I?t=116 …

The sky is vast, the galaxies are vast, the universe is vast. But these are all foreground within background of awareness. The background space is wider than any thought that arises within. Even if that thought is of God, the universe, a pipe, or a finger pointing to the moon.

Take this trick in the first chapter of the book 'Impro': The author asks you to point at a few objects and say what they "aren't". This halts the "naming" mechanism in the mind and makes the world look "fresher".

But also notice that when you point at a cup and say "book", "book" didn't come from anywhere you could control. Notice that thoughts are the same.

Sure you can trace down the origin of a thought (e.g. you were holding a book) but then you have to trace down the thought doing the tracing. Where did *that* come from?

It's like trying to clear muddy water by beating it with a stick. To TRULY track down anything to THE Origin means to track down something to the Beginning of Creation. It means to attempt to find God.

A spiritual path that walks backwards opens doors to more doors to more doors. It never ends. It's as futile as truly figuring out who you are, reversing entropy, or figuring out just why you said "book".

This can be tempting. That's because the doors in the direction of past are *unlocked* while the door to the (desired) future is often barred by the monster of Fear.

Fear is always THE single next door, even if it's a multi-tentacled monster that blocks many doors. (This fear analogy explains why opening this "One" door of dealing with fear leads to the "Many" doors of Freedom.)https://twitter.com/a_yawning_cat/status/1328968602784047109 …

To fight fear is to fight the hydra. The more you poke at it, the more powerful it becomes. The only way past it is to see what it truly is. It is an alarm system, a protector. Dumb as a dog, but in service to YOU.https://twitter.com/a_yawning_cat/status/1342200683374604288?s=20 …

Thus "that shadowy place" of fear is no longer an actual place but a *border*. It is the border between life and death. Death cannot actually enter consciousness because that's not possible by definition. You cannot be conscious of non-consciousness.

This means that Fear is the border between your life and your death. It is rightfully impenetrable. The only way to push it back is to understand it. Understand WHY the safety measures are there. Understand WHY the dog is barking.https://twitter.com/a_yawning_cat/status/1342201239564550144?s=20 …

That border then becomes a friend because knowledge of that border is knowledge of your "edge" and means you are pushing yourself, gaining more knowledge to push back death further. (e.g. getting better at skiing to do more dangerous runs)

The greater your understanding, the more difficult and dangerous things you can do. You push back fear by befriending it, by having it show you where you need to improve.

Instead of memorizing a bunch of useless information (the trap of philosophy) you instead just do what you need to do. Take just that One More Step into fear. Not to punch it, but to hug it. (but also, don't just go up and hug starving rabies stray doggo)

E.g. an easy way to reproduce this dealing with fear is with exercise. Work to your and just do One More. Don't aim for a target, fail, and then beat yourself up. Truly sense your limit and just squeeze one one more. Not ten, just one. Like a kind teacher pushing you.

Incidentally, the target method or "planning" works by creating a False God. You push yourself to fulfill the requirements of the plan and lose touch with your inner sense of limit.
