When you huddle beneath a blanket that border of "fear" is clearly demarcated as the blanket instead of being fuzzy sense of monster under the bed. When you push yourself for one more rep or to improve at something you similarly clarify the border of your competency.
the desire for death and the desire for life are actually somewhat similar b/c both are desires for a clear and reliable sense of where the "border"(fear) is.

I'd say the desire for life is the desire to push back the border and increase the "surface area" of consciousness. The desire for death is the desire to clarify and push back the *fuzziness* that obscures the border. They act on different "things" but in the same direction.
