Minor word adjustments can have interesting effects. E.g. "Life is suffering" doesn't seem to be strictly correct. With a minor adjustment you can instead get: "Existence is suffering, thus Life is my cope."

Thus "that shadowy place" of fear is no longer an actual place but a *border*. It is the border between life and death. Death cannot actually enter consciousness because that's not possible by definition. You cannot be conscious of non-consciousness.

That border then becomes a friend because knowledge of that border is knowledge of your "edge" and means you are pushing yourself, gaining more knowledge to push back death further. (e.g. getting better at skiing to do more dangerous runs)
