keeping “the bar high” w/o a tinge of fear conveys a subconscious belief in a caste-like system.

It presumes a permanent position above the bar which guarantees permanent high status. Being measured against the bar pass this state is considered an insult.

It’s a hybrid ideology where you have meritocratic flux at one state but are grandfathered into a static system after “paying your dues”.
