However... fully destroy this sense of directional force and everyone just floats in limbo. Meaninglessness and loneliness descends like a black fog. Constant innovation and exploring is now *necessary* the same way a shark needs to keep swimming to breathe.
Innovation as a guiding light necessarily homogenizes because "home" is now the school of fish in which you travel. Because there is no True Home you have to constantly keep a pulse on the Crowd and follow so you don't get left behind.
So traditional values actually lower mass-group conformity because they provide an internal attractor that is stronger than fashion/innovation/novelty? Makes sense to counterbalance both during times of rapid change.
I wouldn't say traditional values do so, just that their goal is to do so. If they fail (and often do due to being out of touch) then they don't provide the source of courage/love necessary for people to say "hey wait a sec that's bullshit."
