      is "non-attachment" just a massive cope? it feels actually much easier to go around not getting attached to the outcomes of things (e.g. relationships, potential jobs) than it is to allow yourself to want and hope for them

      I would define 'hope' as the wishing of the character and 'attachment' as that same wishing transcending the story and taking over reality. Hope is a virtuous and critical element of stories as long as it stays bounded to the story.
