Setting a boundary means pointing out that one's awareness (or POV) *cannot* be the same as another's. To feel as "one" constitutes an egregious misstep in storytelling.

The original solitary island feels lonely only when the cold shock of story implosion occurs. A boundary reminder prevents this the same way guard rails prevent a car from driving off a cliff.

Just like guard rails, they're not *intended* to be touched. Physical contact w/ the boundary is a last resort. Creating a boundary that is touched all the time is clumsy. No one is supposed to be hitting them left and right like a bumper car.

Because a boundary has to be seen from some distance in order to be effective, this limits the fidelity of boundaries the same way protocols(like money) eliminate nuance. Contractors/consultants have similar boundary shapes despite often being the most uniquely shaped humans.
