From the pov of a state, violent protests aren't that dangerous. They show obvious implosion tendencies at scale. Large organized coordinate demonstrations however *are*, even if they 100% peaceful. Their internal homogenization means controlling them is relatively easy.
E.g. a large gathering of Falun Gong practitioners is seen as a liability b/c it takes only 1 charismatic cult leader to utilize the group for alternative ends.
Another e.g. if MLK shows up w/ millions of peaceful followers the state will at ALL COSTS protect MLK from dying & being replaced by someone else.
