This created an entire generation of people who lacked both formal and cultural education. The knowledge/wisdom is *there*, but it isn’t LIVED. What is exhibited instead is extreme pragmatic opportunism.

Without a shadow to protect itself, the country was basically raped. The old kung fu master fighting w/ his bare firsts against guns was derided by the new generation as a fucking fucking fucking dumb idiot.
By destroying traditional culture and wisdom, there was a ton a room made to modernize. This included science and technology but also raw material in the new human minds that were now lost.
Most people growing up in China internalize the message that if China is not strong economically and militarily, it will just be bullied just like it was before.
China as an emergent country level entity sees many others as hypocritical rapists asking to be forgiven while not admitting to the rape.
A country usually is a feminine spirit. But sexual exploitation defiles it, adding too much yang to the yin. A “slut” tries to bed as many men as possible, a yang mental framework of dominance.
Similarly, a country can become a giant dick despite being feminine in nature. The “vessel” aspect is lost (gaia, ships, countries are feminine) and the ship becomes a spear.
Godzilla is also an example. It’s the phallic reactive transformation of nature in response to nuclear defilement.
Many intellectuals in China hate capitalism b/c of how it warps society. They are few in number though and much more are pulled into the rat race or running installed scripts of hyper pragmatismm
This is not lost on the more powerful communist party members who are both older and remember the past more clearly. Their compromise is “capitalism with Chinese characteristics”
It is far more than a ham fisted way to paper over obviously hypocritical propaganda. It’s not about refusing to admit that communism failed but about keeping alive the utopia vision of communism. (Remember that communism isn’t a “bad word” in many countries!)
Being pragmatic and apolitical means being more willing to be subsumed by a greater process, just like mitochondria are despite being the source of all power.
It’s like a roman legion. The power to project power forcefully comes at the price of individual thought and individual identity. You submit yourself to the hierarchy of values b/c being a dick with no asshole (imperfections) is the only way to avoid being fucked.

What matter is how much people *now* believe in this story. The shadow is kept alive not by truth but by story.
Anyway... hope this hand waving helps w/ understanding: being apolitical, disillusionment with ideals, hyper-pragmatism with money, obsession with weapons like sci/tech, centralized individuality sapping systems, criticality of keeping the communist ‘ideal’ alive, etc...
