The thought that came to mind after reading was "Time is the distance between consciousnesses" later adjusted "Spacetime is the distance between consciousnesses." Whatever it is that is between "you" and "me", we are connected as long as we're connected in spacetime.

That is, I see in other part of my past or part of my future or as a friend. Forgiveness connects you to your past and courage connects you to the future. You can see the lovable child instead of the quaking coward. The great mortal instead of the unapproachable god.

To disconnect from our past and futures is to lose the same ability that allows us to connect with other people. It says "You are not in the same universe as I am" by saying that there is no spacetime route from "me" to "you". We're in different universes.
