If history is written by the winners, then trying to understand the world by studying history is to side with the winners by "thinking like them."
There’s a mainstream orthodox history though. The goodness/badness of the interpretation changes depending on who currently is “winning”. The raw material from both sides are readily available as you mention.

E.g. because the nazis “lost” it’s very difficult to get into the headspace of nazism as “good”. There’s something “dirty” about it even though it’s a good exercise in understanding “evil”.
