Competence grants freedom. Responsibility makes this tricky b/c responsibility to others is what allows coordinated action which is a much greater form of competence yet also reduces individual freedom.

Thus a constant tension between responsibility and freedom. If you choose to be in a state where you can do whatever you want you have to build everything around you from sticks and wood. Like.. minecraft...

Ah... I see the appeal of games now. They more directly tap into the competence -> freedom link. Also explains why many people have love/hate relationships to multiplayer games. All problems are interpersonal relationship problems.
