joy & difficult: right direction - towards future - eyes open. joy & !difficult: wrong direction - towards past. !joy & !difficult: boredom - not moving. !joy & difficult: anxiety - eyes closed - being carried towards the future.

right/wrong direction is a virtual reality path created by a hierarchy of value beacon. life is the walking, not the direction. What direction to choose, speed to walk at, who to walk with etc... doesn't matter. as long you you can walk in peace.

difficulty is mandatory for a free life. being bored or walking in the wrong direction are possible only due to privilege of excess resources. joy is optional. though it isn't as simple as just wanting it. It's like how being able to play piano, or juggle, or w/e is optional.

acceptance of difficulty/struggle ie. 'the obstacle is the way' way merges the two. the difficulty of life and the difficulty of joy become the same thing.

though difficulty can be fetishized. ascetism, self-flagellation(the mental form is quite an epidemic), even wine/coffee tasting. difficulty becomes some sort of stack ranking exercise. "ah yes, this wine tastes like the dirt of 1960's France, can't you tell?"
