I also think that the "understanding" only feels good when the target of understanding is bounded and intentionally expressed. E.g. if you proactively try to "understand" the truth of somebody who is intentionally wearing a mask they'll feel attacked.

Sad people for example seem more happy to feel understood rather than happy people. Online identities or avatars also probably are more happy to be understood since they express only a specific part of our whole selves. Being written off is impossible.
