Diversity can decrease serendipity when it's used for the sake of newness rather than resonance.

It's possible to argue that this is the 'good' kind of diversity. Everyone looks different but thinks the same. Does this feel kinda weird? Like "shallow diversity"?

It feels different though when it's phrased as "Gathering your people from all corners of the world." That feels more like "Finding your tribe."

What's interesting is that "Finding your tribe." seems to be one of the main drivers for diversity. The desire to feel less lonely and out of place.

Like say for tech.. a bunch of nerds used their knowledge of computers to connect the world and find their people. Now "tech" is a mainstream community that has expanded and intruded into the bro community and even the girl community.

Now everyone's angry that everyone thinks the same in tech even though they're just doing the normal tribe finding thing. Everyone was real excited when girls started joining the community.

A previous minority group with very little knowledge at dealing with aggression, conflict, girls, etc... is now tasked with the task of dealing with aggression, conflict, gender differences, etc...

Normally tribes have a self limiting mechanism in that the more influential they become the more territory they cover. The tribal identity gets more diffuse and lowest common denominator.

The bigger the elephant, the slower it moves. The amount of damage it can do is limited.

Technology is anything that increases this leverage. The ability to manage more with less. Anything that increases the ratio of this leverage is technology.

The more leverage a small group of people has over the majority the more monotonous the world feels. The many end up as NPCs in the game worlds of the few.

At the extreme end you have the world as a dream in the mind of god. Everyone is just a complex NPC that god makes up. Using powerful AI to model complete personalities based on a few scraps of interaction information.

What's weird is that "world as god's dream" is literally just first person pov because there's no way for "I" to have a point of view that's not from the perspective of "I'. Even out mental models of our closest people are just models with more information. Like GPT-99.

From the POV of self, everyone else is an NPC . Everything that feels human or solid or "real" dissolves when you poke at it. Even literal matter dissolves when you zoom into it.

It's very tiring to be holding the whole world in your mind all the time. It weighs nothing and yet it is one of the greatest burdens on the soul.

The world expands when there are enough people vibrating at the "I am IN the world" state while it contracts in areas where people are vibrating "The world in the palm of my hand." state.

I think what the world is waiting for now is for board game night to lose its charm. When the concept of any game feels like a hackneyed DLC. That's when we'll start opening the curtains to reality.

Feel bored? Congratulations, you're nearing the end of the game. No pressure. It's up to you to decide to cross over. If you still want to play the games feel free. Once you're bored...then come back...

Learning to love boredom is like the super sized challenge of learning to like vegetables as a kid. It's a 10,000 hour thing, like differentiating wine, math, or a musical instrument. The 'loving' doesn't start until you've put in the work.

Most people plateau. They feel "stuck". That they just can't improve any more at math or piano. Whatever level of difficulty you get stuck at is also where you're stuck at with boredom appreciation.

Boredom appreciation is the same as life appreciation, being happy to just be alive is something that requires a 'beginner's mind'. The willingness to suspend boredom and actively search for the interestingness.

The marshmallow test tests the primal addiction children of sugar. I'd wager a guess that the 'good parents' who pass the 'get the kid to eat vegetables' test also raise children who can pass the marshmallow test better.
