Stories are pretty cool in that they can rewrite history. E.g. if someone hurts me, I can change it from a moment of painful vulnerability to an "Enter the Villain" event and start on Heroic Journey.
The downside is that the only way for the story to end is to confront the villain who will probably reply with "Yo wtf are you talking about."

Sometimes when I'm angry at someone I don't know if I'm being disciplined by holding back the anger or if I'm too cowardly to express anger and expressing anger would be the more disciplined thing to do.

When both options are equally difficult, the 'right' one seems to be the one that "lets go of the story". There seems to be an element of sadness to discipline rather than just raw willpower.

E.g. if the story is "I can't do anything in this unfair world." the right action is to assert yourself. If the story is ”This asshole is an asshole." the right action is to act with kindness.

In a more complex story like "In this unfair world I have to deal with assholes like this." then there isn't a 'right' action. The story has to be broken down into parts. Sometimes you are right, sometimes you are left.

You'll appear to self-contradict yourself, going all over the place. The only vindication is at the end when the knot is untangled. When the story dissolves.
