What separates humans from animals is the ability to manipulate our reward mechanism instead of having one imposed on us. That is.. we get to choose our God.

People vary in their ability to manipulate their rewards mechanisms. Many can't even train a dog or a cat let alone their 'self' (an actual human w/ access to all your knowledge)

E.g. a great marriage is probably built by a mutual vow that "your happiness will be my only reward." It's a form of shackling. "I will work through whatever pain happens because through this pain is the only way I'll be happy."
