“Marching” for something should be like a military parade. It demonstrates strength through solidity. It makes the palace kings wonder what it is that’s uniting the barbarian tribes.

A non-coordinated chaotic mass of people delivers the message “we want stuff”. This has an easy resolution. Give stuff to random factions and have them fight each other.

It’s a test in a way. “Wanting stuff” is too weak of an ideal. A mob that just wants stuff *should* collapse under its own chaos.

It’s interesting that technology doesn’t seem to improve the ability to demonstrate strength through coordination. E.g. a massive march through a city with no violence whatsoever feels impossible nowadays.

The liquidity of words and images and video is vastly improved. They seep into every corner of our lives and minds. Yet it doesn’t connect us. It’s more like a pool of lukewarm water that seems to dissolve “us”.
